Curriculum intent:
The study of Modern Languages challenges students to communicate in another language and think in new ways; it inspires a love of language learning and an intellectual curiosity about how language can both influence and be influenced by a diversity of culture.
The Modern Languages Department is committed to providing excellent teaching and endeavours to ensure that all students of varying abilities and interests should be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential in Spanish at all levels. Our intent is to create independent, life-long language learners who can use their knowledge and skills to continue to learn languages, communicate across cultures and enjoy the intellectual challenge beyond their time with us. Learning a language is vital, in order to develop citizens who can compete in an increasingly globalised workplace and society. The skills and knowledge gained through the study of Modern Languages GCSEs nurture global citizens, who appreciate the value of a culturally diverse society and who can leave school with valued qualifications which prove that they are equipped with the skills to work in a variety of cultural contexts.
As the National Curriculum states:
“Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.”
At SJH, our aims are:
• to equip our students with the knowledge and understanding of how to be successful language learning practitioners;
• to make our students become competitive players in the global jobs market;
• to ensure that the vast majority of our students opt to continue with MFL at GCSE;
• to make maximum use of the latest courses and teaching methods, in order to engage and motivate our students.
