Key Stage 5

A Level English Language

Exam Board: AQA

English Language at A Level is an exciting and varied course that offers something for everyone. Across the two years, students explore various language areas, such as linguistic analysis, creative writing, sociolinguistic theories, child language acquisition and the history of English.

The specification explores the study of the English Language, both as a medium of communication and as a topic in its own right, emphasising students' ability to pursue lines of enquiry, debate different views, and work independently to research aspects of language in use. Language is seen as a creative tool for expression, social connection, and individual cognition. The study of language as a symbolic system, used to assert power in society is also fundamental to the scope of this specification.

Specification Overview:

Methods of language analysis:

Over the course of the A-Level, students will use a distinctive approach to analysis shaped by the particular needs of the research pathway or theme chosen. We will cover some relevant aspects of the language levels, as follows:

phonetics, phonology and prosodics: how speech sounds and effects are articulated and analysed
graphology: the visual aspects of textual design and appearance
lexis and semantics: the vocabulary of English, including social and historical variation
grammar, including morphology: the structural patterns and shapes of English at sentence, clause, phrase and word level
pragmatics: the contextual aspects of language use discourse: extended stretches of communication occurring in different genres, modes and contexts.

Assessment:

Assessment in A Level English Language aims to capture students' progress at three points throughout the academic year. This enables teachers to know which area of study to re-teach or review. Teachers can identify gaps in student learning, and through effective feedback, students can resolve misconceptions and swiftly develop further knowledge and skills.

GCSE English Language Resits at KS5

At SJH, we are committed to supporting students who still need to improve their literacy and English skills in the Sixth Form.

For those students who return to KS5 without a grade 4 or above in English, we offer three lessons a week, in line with their other subjects.

Assessment:

Students on the resit pathway are assessed regularly via mock exams, practice tasks, and in-class assessments. We offer a November GCSE resit opportunity for students who are ready for this and a summer exam in June. Functional skills 1 and 2 will be assessed on an ‘on-demand’ basis.

Support and Intervention:

Students are supported by staff via Google Classrooms, where they are given homework and additional materials to support their learning, as needed. Students can contact staff for further support, if necessary.
