At Sir John Hunt, the PE team believes that Physical Education is about more than making a competent sports person, more than just engaging in physical activity. Although it is about these things, the real mission for us is to create young adults who make healthy life choices, have good physical and mental well-being and, in turn, increase their life expectancy, then take this education and pass it down to the next generation.
We consider a physically well educated person to have excellent social skills, enabling them to communicate with people at all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Physical Education teaches students how to work in a team, when to be a leader, when to be a follower and when to collaborate in order to succeed. Sport and activity teaches resilience in its crudest form, the ability to lose, learn from it and try again, to lose with dignity and not let it defeat you.
As well as teamwork, Physical Education lessons at Sir John Hunt allow students to gain independence, from being able to lead their own warm ups, to being able to officiate their own matches and be officiated by peers, without losing the sportsmanship values that are embedded into their lessons.
Physical Education at Sir John Hunt allows students freedom in open spaces, access to fresh air and learning in a unique environment. We hope to encourage more students into the vast career opportunities that there are in sport, from sports science, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, nutritionists, athletes, managers, coaches, teachers, psychologists and the military, to name a few.
PE is a subject that truly has the power to build memories. Our hope is that this will encourage lifelong participation, through enjoyment and achievement.
