At SJH we teach practical PE through four key concepts. The main aims of the PE curriculum are to create young adults who make healthy life choices, have good physical and mental well-being and in turn increase their life expectancy through lifelong participation within sport.
Four practical PE concepts:
Four practical PE concepts:
1. Fitness for life
2. Competence
3. Competition
4. Communication
Through this, we aim to encourage students to have a holistic view of physical activities. This is why we teach them to analyse performance, provide feedback and officiate, as well as take part within sports.
The National Curriculum states that “Pupils should build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Key Stage 1&2, become more competent, be confident and expert in their techniques and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.”
KS3 practical PE Assessment
Assessment in Physical Education aims to capture the progress that students are making at three points throughout the academic year. This enables teachers to know which of the four concepts to re-teach to ensure skills are consistently being developed. The assessment data then allows teachers to provide students with accurate feedback, to ensure students develop further knowledge and their performance of skills.
Year 7
• Baseline assessment on entry (carousel) will be used to set the students.
• Final assessments at three points throughout the academic year, on a 12-week cycle, based on the four different concepts.
Year 8 & 9
• Assessment data is used from Year 7 to accurately set classes.
• Final assessments at three points throughout the academic year, on a 12-week cycle, based on the four different concepts (developing skills in team sports, developing skills in individual sports, officiating, analysis of performance).
