Music students from Sir John Hunt Community Sports College and All Saints Academy Plymouth staged their very own concert and raised money for children with cancer at the same time. The performers showcased their musical talents at The Hub in Bath Street on Tuesday, January 23 at 7.30pm.
Tickets for The Live Showcase were priced at just £2 and the money from all sales will be donated to Derriford Children’s Cancer Service (DCCS) who look after children with cancer and leukaemia who live in Plymouth, West Devon and East Cornwall.
The concert was funded and supported through WOW, a lottery funded organisation helping young people to learn about financial independence. The musical maestros say they have wanted to organise their own concert for some time and with the help of £1,500 funding from WOW, were able to put this into reality. Student, Josh said: “We had talked about a concert outside of school and found out about the WOW Foundation and it came from there. It is one of our units to do live performing. We’ve had to plan the venue and event, rather than just turn up to an event, so it is more like what the real life of music is like.”
A team of youth workers from WOW worked with the students to plan the entire event and help them gain practical skills, knowledge and experience of managing finances and improve their budget skills. “Our Rock School course is about performing live and being efficient performers so organising the concert will enhance this and help when working in the outside environment of music,” says student Kelly aged 17, who is hoping to pursue teaching with a specialism in music.
On the night, doors opened at 7pm, The Live Showcase featured three different sets with a mixed bag of music including Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, Stevie Wonder and Oasis. Sir John Hunt Community Sports College music teacher, Mr Cleverley, said: “Normally the students just turn up to events and it was getting a bit boring for them. They are being tasked with something about the music environment, unlike lunchtime concerts, The Live Showcase has shown them about the real world of music.”
