SJH Students Set Sail on the Adventure of a Lifetime

This summer, ten brave young explorers swapped classrooms for the open sea and spent five unforgettable nights aboard the Johanna Lucretia, a stunning topsail schooner. Over the course of their 70-mile journey along the breath-taking Cornish coast, students didn’t just travel - they transformed.

Under the guidance of experienced crew members, our students learned the ropes - quite literally! They trimmed sails, took turns at the helm, mastered navigation, and even flemished lines like seasoned sailors. But this was no ordinary school trip. Alongside their sailing qualification, students learned how to cook at sea, clean the heads (ship’s toilets!), work as a crew, and - most importantly - discover their own resilience and teamwork skills.

Of course, there was plenty of fun along the way. Days were filled with treasure hunts, swimming straight off the boat, and rock pooling expeditions where students discovered baby octopuses, cushion stars, brittle stars, and even some impressively large crabs!

Here’s what some of our adventurers had to say:

“The sunset was incredible. I don’t think I have ever sat still and seen something so beautiful.”
“I didn’t know how I would cope being away from home. I miss and appreciate what my folks do for me - cooking, cleaning, everything - it’s hard work!”

“I didn’t know the people I went with, but after five days living closely together - cleaning toilets, jumping into the sea, playing games, tidying the boat - I feel I’ve learned a lot about myself. I know I can do more than I ever thought possible!”

We are incredibly proud of our students for stepping out of their comfort zones and embracing this incredible challenge.

A huge thank you goes to The Island Trust, whose support made this life-changing experience possible for our young people. This was more than just a trip - it was a journey of confidence, teamwork and discovery that they will carry with them for years to come.
