Year 7 dive into fruit salad fun and learn some seriously sharp skills.
This week, our Year 7 Food Tech students picked up their first real kitchen tool - the knife - and learned how to use it safely and confidently. With hands in the "claw" position and eyes on the chopping board, they practiced slicing, dicing, and carefully preparing a delicious mix of fruits for their very own fruit salads.
There were strawberries, kiwis, apples, bananas, melons, and more - all chopped with care (and just a little competitive flair). The results? Colourful, healthy bowls of fruity goodness - and not a single plaster needed!
But the highlight of the lesson (and possibly the term) was the legendary...
One-Peel Orange Challenge
The rules were simple:
• Peel your orange
• Keep the skin in one single, unbroken piece (preferably in the shape of an elephant's trunk and ears!)
• Brag forever if you succeed!
What followed was a mix of intense concentration, some very sticky fingers, and a lot of fun. Students twisted, turned, and gently unwound their oranges with surgeon-like precision, hoping to achieve that satisfying peel of success! Some peel attempts snapped at the final moment, but many succeeded!
Not only was it a fun challenge, but a sneaky lesson in fine motor skills, patience, and perseverance - plus, it made the classroom smell amazing!
Well done to all our Year 7 chefs-in-training! Next stop: MasterChef?
