The Student Council were invited to meet the Lord Mayor of Plymouth at Council House.
Councillor Mark Shayer was elected Lord Mayor last year. He was insightful, offering many pearls of wisdom to our students and extremely proud that he’s been able to represent the people in his ward and help resolve all sorts of issues.
Students asked Mark questions, ranging from; why has council tax gone up, how do potholes get fixed and what football team he supports?! (He’s more of a Rugby fan!)
They also got to see inside the Council Chamber, which enable student to see where local politics is held and learn more about the role of councillors.
A highlight was the students learning some history about Plymouth, introducing some of them to historical figures, Sir Francis Drake and Nancy Astor for the first time. We were also very privileged to try on Nancy Astor’s cartier diamonds, valued at around £1 million, which she donated to the City. (Sadly, I was unable to sneak them out!)
It was a great experience; thank you to the Lord Mayor, for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with us.
