Year 8 students were invited by the University of Plymouth to participate in an exciting outreach event at the Marine Station. The event, designed by PhD researchers at the University of Plymouth, aimed to inspire and engage students with marine science through a series of interactive workshops and hands-on activities.
They used top of the range microscopes to search out zooplankton in a water sample from Plymouth Sound, and engaged in an Oil Spill challenge, where they all took on a different role, from Government Official to Marine Ecologists, to ensure the safety of marine life after the spill.
It was a great day, made even better by the pizzas we had for lunch, and provided opportunities for students to learn about the wide range of potential careers in marine science and allowed them to engage with people who are working in the field themselves.
We will be welcoming University of Plymouth into school again to encourage more thought about our oceans and hopefully inspire a new generation of marine scientists.
