Sir John Hunt’s GCSE Geography students embarked on an exciting two-day field trip to deepen their understanding of key geographical topics - from urban regeneration and energy management to coastal erosion and defence strategies.
Day One: Discovering Urban Regeneration in Plymouth
The trip began in Plymouth, where students visited the Devonport Energy from Waste Incinerator, learning how the city turns waste into energy and reduces its reliance on landfill and fossil fuels. The visit offered valuable insight into sustainable energy management and the practical challenges of balancing environmental responsibility with urban development.
Following this, the group continued their studies in Devonport and Plymouth City Centre, focusing on the city’s ongoing regeneration projects. Students observed the changes taking place across Plymouth — from new developments to refurbished public spaces - and had the opportunity to speak with members of the public about their views on how the city is evolving. This helped the students gather primary data and understand local perspectives on urban change in their home city.
Day Two: Coastal Fieldwork at Dawlish Warren
On the second day, the students travelled to Dawlish Warren, one of South Devon’s most dynamic coastal environments. Equipped with clipboards and measuring tools, they conducted fieldwork on coastal erosion and evaluated the effectiveness of coastal defences such as groynes, sea walls, and sand dunes. Our students worked hard in collecting their data, analysing erosion rates, and assessing how well current management strategies protect the coastline and local habitats at Dawlish Warren spit.
The two days provided students with hands-on experience that will directly support their GCSE studies. It was an opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-world environments, strengthening their skills in data collection, analysis, and evaluation.
The Geography Department would like to thank all staff and students involved for their enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the trip - and for representing SJH in an excellent manner.
