Intent
At Sir John Hunt, our business curriculum is designed to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in today’s dynamic commercial landscape. Through the BTEC Level 3 in Business, we deliver a practical, real-world education that prepares students for both higher education and employment in a range of business-related fields.
Our curriculum promotes enterprise, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while embedding key employability skills such as communication, time management, and professionalism. Lessons are rooted in current business practice, case studies, and industry trends, helping students to contextualise learning and understand the relevance of business theory in real-world scenarios.
By combining academic knowledge with vocational learning, our aim is to inspire future business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals. Big Ideas

Exploring Business |
Students will learn about different types of businesses and how they are structured. They will understand how outside factors (e.g. politics or the economy) can affect a business, and how different stakeholders are involved. Students will also look at how businesses use innovation and enterprise to grow and succeed. |

Developing a Marketing Campaign |
Students will build skills in researching a target audience and planning an effective marketing campaign. They will study what influences consumer choices and how marketing is used. They will also learn to budget and measure how well a campaign performs. |

Personal and Business Finance |
Students will develop confidence in managing money by learning how to budget, track spending, and understand income. They will explore different ways to fund a business, read financial documents, and calculate profits and break-even points to support smart financial decisions. |

Recruitment and Selection |
Students will discover how businesses find and choose the right people for jobs. They will learn about different recruitment methods and the laws that protect fair hiring. Students will also gain hands-on experience in tasks like writing CVs and taking part in mock interviews, while exploring how businesses keep employees motivated. |
Overview
Students begin with Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance, where they explore key financial concepts for both individuals and businesses. Topics include budgeting, saving, credit, cash flow forecasting, break-even analysis, sources of finance, accounting statements, and evaluating performance using financial ratios.
After completing the Unit 3 exam, they move on to Unit 1: Exploring Business—a coursework-based unit. Here, they gain broad business knowledge, covering:
- Types and structures of businesses
- The impact of the external environment and stakeholders
- Fundamentals of marketing, enterprise, innovation, and competition
Assessment involves written reports, case studies, and presentations.
Year 13
The year starts with Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign, an exam-based unit. Students dive into marketing principles, learning to:
- Set campaign aims and objectives
- Segment target markets
- Design and justify media and marketing mix strategies, including digital and social media
- Plan budgets and timelines
- Interpret market research data
This unit culminates in creating a real-world marketing campaign under timed exam conditions.
Finally, students complete Unit 8: Recruitment and Selection Process, a practical, assignment-based unit focused on human resources. They learn to:
- Design job roles and recruitment materials
- Apply selection methods and conduct interviews
- Evaluate the recruitment process and reflect on their own performance
