Our Key Stage 4 Offer
Key Stage 4
Welcome to KS4!
This is a big and exciting part of your education that builds on the skills and knowledge you have learned during Key Stage 3. During these two years you can study subjects that you have a love and a passion for. You will have selected your option subjects at the end of Year 9, to study alongside the Core subjects of English, Maths, Science and PD in preparation for your GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11.
At Sir John Hunt Community Sports College, you are in a very privileged position due to the introduction of Period 7, an hour of compulsory lessons running throughout the week from 3-4pm. This accumulates to over 125 hours’ worth of contact time with teachers that other schools and students do not receive.

GCSE Exams and Deadlines
Be aware of important deadlines for your NEA submissions and GCSE exam dates, which will take place in the summer of Year 11. Make sure to check for mock exam dates and revision sessions, which are crucial for practice and preparation. Your tutors and teachers will of course make you aware of these key dates, however as Key Stage 4 students, it is your responsibility to be prepared.
Year 10 Mock Exams are usually held towards the end of the year, following the completion of GCSE examinations.
At Sir John Hunt we run two periods of mock exams in Year 11. The first set are usually held in November, with the second set at the end of February. This provides time for teachers to revisit important content and perfect exam technique.
Please contact s.roberts@sjhcsc.co.uk if you have any questions regarding exams.
Revision & Support
At KS4, we understand that the workload can feel overwhelming at times, but there is plenty of support available:
Champions' Hour: Runs every night after Period 7 for Year 11 students in the Learning Café. It is an opportunity to complete homework, revision tasks or use the IT facilities. Staff are on hand to support and motivate students.
Tutors, Teachers & Pastoral team: Always feel free to approach your tutors or subject teachers for help. If you’re struggling with anything, don’t wait—reach out early. If you need more pastoral support, we have a fantastic and dedicated Pastoral team to help with anything.
Revision for our students is compulsory at Key Stage 4 and is set mainly on platforms such as Sparx Maths, Seneca for English and Sparx Science. Option subjects at Year 11 set revision using different methods. Year 10 students need only complete English, Maths and Science homework.

Assessment: Coursework and Revision
Plan your revision: It’s important to stay organised and manage your time well. Many students find it helpful to create a revision timetable early in Year 10, which can be adjusted as needed throughout the course. During Period 0, throughout the Year, Year 11 students practice using college agreed revision strategies such as; Cornell notes, Flashcards and Past Papers which are all evidence backed, to help our students be prepared for assessments.
Flashcards:
Exam Topic Lists
Exam Topic Lists give details of content which could come up in a particular exam or exam paper. By having this information this will allow you to plan your revision as you will be able to identify which topics you need to revise.
In addition, each Exam Topic List will also contain details about where you can find further information for each topic. For example, this could be page numbers in a revision guide or links to online learning platforms. This will then support you in carrying out independent revision, whether that be at home, Breakfast Club or Champions' Hour.
If you are unsure about how to use the Exam Topic Lists, please speak to your subject teachers, tutor or Ms Williams.

Sparx
Sparx is a fantastic online learning platform which supports students with independent maths study. It contains hundreds of videos explaining and modelling key maths skills and concepts, as well as thousands of questions which students can complete to check their understanding.
In addition, students can use their questions level analysis sheets (which they receive after mock exams and assessments), to practise topics which they have identified as needing to work on,
All students have been issued with a username and password, but any students who are having difficulty in accessing their account can email Mr Stockton on d.stockton@sjhcsc.co.uk
Seneca Learning
You may be aware that we’re using Seneca Learning to support our students’ digital learning.
Seneca offers high-quality free online learning courses for students to study from a computer, tablet or phone.
Seneca also provides free parent accounts. Their free parent accounts allow you to track your child’s learning and help make conversations about school and learning easier.
Seneca’s parent accounts also allow you to learn alongside your child if you wish to do so. This might be helpful in supporting you to work with your child on areas of their school work that you are less familiar with.
You can sign up for a free Seneca parent account here: app.senecalearning.com/parent
Seneca have made this handy 2 minute video to help you get started.
Or you can read how to get your free account if you’d prefer.
If you have any questions about how Seneca works, you can get support from the Seneca team using the live chat on their website or you can email them at learnmore@seneca.io.
I hope you find Seneca’s free parent account useful!
